Tips
for Big Bream Catches
A change in climate in recent years, with warm summers and
milder than average winters, has created a huge increase
of the fish rich Erne's stocks. Roach of all sizes have
exploded and the Erne bream seem to be getting bigger. Fish
are plentiful at all stages of maturity. The Erne System
now holds abundant supplies of roach from the 2oz to 1lb
plus category and bream to 5lb, averaging 3lb. To sort out
those bigger fish and better catches it is important to
step up your gear. I use big open ended feeders, and hooks
sizes 14 and 12s. It is important to keep feeding bait regularly
to keep these big shoals interested, even in winter (providing
the weather is not exceptionally cold). I use feeders with
a least 1oz on, sometimes up to 2oz. Binder mixers are a
must for that, great flavour, colour, and texture. Perfect
for blending with brown crumb, (2-1). It is packed with
crushed particles. I always add plenty of casters and during
times of warm water temperatures, some sweetcorn. My first
choice of hookbait is worm, although there are days when
red maggots work best. Worm and corn cocktails should be
considered, particularly when feeding with corn.
Classic
Catches Mark Smith knows some excellent waters on
the Lough Gowna System, part of the Upper Erne catchment.
I fished one day in late summer and after pre-baiting, literally
bagged on 4 to 6lb bream all day long, fishing an open ended
feeder in to 12 feet of water at 30 yards (the drop off
point). These bream responded best to a 4 foot tail and
the prime bait was corn tipped with caster.
Regular
casting with the feeder had the fish queuing up and my total
for the day was 120lb.
